We’ve all seen it, the wall of your home with the paint job that is starting to peel and crack. It’s very unsightly and begs for repair. But how do you do do it properly? That’s the question. The Answer lies in the answer to how it happened in the first place.
Cracked and peeling paint on interior walls tend to stem from improperly prepared surfaces painted and later moisture seeps through to the surface causing the paint layers to bulge and then crack and peel.
Repairing peeling paint starts with that surface. First, you will need to lay a drop cloth beneath the work area. Then you will need to scrape away any loose paint with a paint scraper followed by a wire brush.
Next, smooth out the surface with a fine textured sand paper so that it is as flush with the wall as you can get it. Now you will need to repair the surface with a patch compound.
Take a small amount of compound ask spread a thin layer evenly over the surface of the entire patch with a putty knife ensuring that the layer of compound is flush with the layer of paint around the patch. Repeat the process as necessary to obtain an even surface area.
Allow the compound to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions before moving forward. Once completely dry, sand the surface area evenly until the entire repair area is smooth. Using a microfiber cloth, wipe away any dust from the area entirely.
Now apply a primer with a paint brush, first around the edges of the patched area and then in the middle, to prevent further cracking or peeling. Allow the primer to dry according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Now simply paint the surface using the same approach as with the primer. Allow to dry and repeat if necessary to achieve an even tone congruent with the rest of the wall.
And there you have it, a simply DIY solution to peeling and cracked interior paint.
